POS–Cash Register Linking Requirement:
Technical Overview and Key Deadlines
Starting 1 January 2026, businesses accepting electronic payments will be required to link their POS devices to their certified electronic cash registers (RT). This obligation, introduced by the 2025 Budget Law, aims to ensure consistency between electronic payments and the fiscal data transmitted to the Italian Revenue Agency.
The connection is logical, not physical: no cables or hardware changes are required. Instead, the association is completed through the online portal “Fatture e Corrispettivi”.
Operational tools will be available in early March 2026. From that date, businesses will have 45 days to register all POS devices already in use as of 1 January 2026.
For any newly activated POS, the link must be completed between the 6th day of the second month after activation and the last working day of the same month.
Technically, the system associates each POS device’s unique identifier with the RT’s serial number. Identifiers are pre‑loaded based on data provided by financial operators.
While the rule does not change daily payment operations, it introduces a mandatory administrative step that becomes part of the fiscal digital framework starting in 2026.
